Technical visit to the WUPA Wastewater treatment Plant (WWTP), FCT

On the 19th July, 2017 the members of the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE) embark on a technical visit to WUPA Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) which was approved by the management of Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB).The Plant manager Engr. Danladi Usman in his brief presentation welcome the Environmental Engineers to the WUPA WWTP , he further stated that the plant started in the year 2006 and was commissioned in the month of May, 2007. He also introduce Engr. Emma a process Engineer and Mr Michael a Laboratory Superintendent who took the Members round the Plant with detail explanation from each stage and also list the do’s and don’ts in the Plant with a nose mask given to every person for the Plant tour.Below are some photo talks.

Sewage/Wastewater from flushing the toilet, bathing, washing sinks and general cleaning are transported through gravitation in pipes from the city center to the treatment plant. In the inlet chamber mechanical treatment start immediately followed by screening (Smaller particles being sieved) then scrapping (Removal of the oily film mixtures) before the Aeration state. The major process is the Biological treatment which takes place at the Aeration tank (27million litter) the heart of the WWTP. The Aeration tank allows oxygen into the sewage were reaction takes place with the aid of the mixer to breakdown the compound (Urea, nitrate...etc) before the sedimentation process which takes place in the Clarifiers.

The Clear water pass through the Ultra Violet ray (Denature) in other to destroy or diminish any trace of specific biological activity before being sent back to the river in the various communities around the city. The byproduct which is the waste activated sludge goes through the Dewatering system and Drying bed to form Cake known as Manure for Agricultural use. After further clarification and recommendation made, the Vice-Chairman Engr. Ben Amalikolo,MNSE on behalf of the Chairman in his closing remark said that the industrial /technical visit really help him alongside the members with a lot of insight about WasteWater treatment and appreciate the plant Manager and his crew members for the good job they are doing especially that of the maintenance culture. He further commend the AEPB and the Nigerian Government for their consistency in piloting the affairs of the plant since it was commissioned, at least with the proper functioning of the plant there will be adequate clean water supply to the society.

However he appreciate the members present for making out time to enrich themselves with the happenings in the WasteWater Treatment Plant and also job well done to the technical coordinator research and development, Engr. Henry Okoye MNSE who work tirelessly for the success of the visit.
